Assistant Professor in the Communication & Media Department at SUNY Oneonta

Emma Bedor Hiland is an Assistant Professor in the Communication & Media Department at SUNY Oneonta. Previously she was an Assistant Professor at the College of Saint Rose until its closure, where she created the College’s minor in Health Humanities. She received her PhD in Communication Studies from the University of Minnesota in 2018.  Her dissertation examined what she calls the digital mental health industry, in which technologies (including artificial intelligence, smartphone applications, and telemedicine) are used to deliver mental healthcare. In addition to continuing her scholarship on the intersections of technology and medicine, she brings a cultural studies perspective to her work on women’s health, media studies, and the financialization of everyday life.

She is also the author of Therapy Tech: The Digital Transformation of Mental Healthcare. Her other research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, books, and popular formats including The Hastings Center’s Bioethics Forum, The Hedgehog Review, Qualitative Health Communication, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Feminist Media Studies, and Biocitizenship: The Politics of Bodies, Governance, and Power.
